Accu-Chek Active vs Instant vs Instant S Comparison

Accu-Chek Active, Instant and Instant S are the three Roche glucometers you'll see most often in Indian pharmacies and on Amazon. All three give reliable readings. The real differences are which strips they use, whether they connect to your phone, and how big a blood drop they need.
Quick answer
Best value for most people: Accu-Chek Instant S. The cheapest kit, needs only a tiny blood drop, and uses the same low-cost Instant strips.
If you want readings on your phone: Accu-Chek Instant. The same meter as the Instant S, plus Bluetooth, the mySugr app and a backlit screen.
If you already own one, or want meal markers on the meter: Accu-Chek Active. Still sold and its strips are easy to find, but it is the oldest design and needs a bigger drop of blood.

What is actually different
Strips and running cost
The meter is a one-time cost; the strips are what you keep paying for. Active strips and Instant strips are not interchangeable. The Instant and Instant S share the same Instant strips, which are usually a little cheaper online than Active strips, and 100-strip packs bring the cost per test down further. If you test twice a day you will use about 60 strips a month, so a rupee or two per strip adds up over a year.
Blood sample and ease of testing
The Instant and Instant S need only 0.6 µL of blood, and the yellow edge of the strip can be touched anywhere along its length. The Active needs a larger drop applied to the strip window. In practice that means fewer wasted strips and re-pricks with the Instant models, which matters for older users and anyone who struggles to get a good drop.
Bluetooth or no Bluetooth
This is the only real difference between the Instant and the Instant S. The Instant syncs readings to the free mySugr app, so you can see trends and share a report with your doctor, and its screen is backlit for testing at night. If you write your readings in a notebook anyway, the Instant S does the same job for less.
Accuracy
All three are sold by Roche as meeting the ISO 15197:2013 accuracy standard, which requires 95% of readings to fall within ±15 mg/dL of a lab value below 100 mg/dL, or within ±15% above it. For day-to-day use, technique matters more than the model: wash and dry your hands, don't squeeze the finger hard, and don't use expired strips.
Is the Active still worth buying?
The Active is the oldest of the three, but it is still widely sold and has on-meter meal markers and a post-meal reminder. If you already own one and have strips at home, there is no need to switch. For a new buyer, the Instant S is the better value.

For most people the Accu-Chek Instant S is the one to buy: it costs the least, needs the smallest blood drop, and uses cheap, easy-to-find strips. Pay a little more for the Instant if you want your readings on your phone. Stick with the Active only if you already own one.
